JAPANESE

Aims

  • To broaden students’ general language abilities and to bring their own language into sharper focus
  • To enrich students intellectually, socially and culturally
  • To develop an understanding of the ways in which other people think and behave
  • To further international relations and trade

Achievement Aims

Students will:
  • Develop the skills needed to understand and use spoken and written Japanese
  • Communicate effectively in Japanese for authentic purposes
  • Learn the conventions of communication in Japanese and develop an understanding of Japanese culture.

Courses

Japanese is offered from Year 9 through to Year 13.

The levels define a natural progression of learning. Differentiation between levels is built in through:

  • The increasing complexity of the learning activities
  • The increasing range and variety of the language used
  • The expectation of increasing learner independence
Communication is the pivotal point of the language programmes. Effective, stimulating and varied communicative activities form the basis of the teaching and learning programme. Through such activities, students become more experienced and confident in other areas, for example cultural awareness, while involved in meaningful communication.

Japanese Culture

Culture embodies the everyday experiences and lifestyles of native speakers as well as the historical background of their language. Language and culture are interwoven. Aspects of Japanese culture are an integral part of the communicative functions and language skills. The students are encouraged to interact with various Japanese visitors to the school and to take the opportunity to travel to Japan.

Japanese Cultural Exchanges and Trip

The Japanese Department has an annual two week trip to Japan (subject to student numbers and the exchange rate).  We are hosted by our sister school, Takasaki Higashi Senior High School, for a week and spend a week exploring Japan by train. In term three of each year we host students and teachers from Takasaki Higashi Senior High School.
