ENGLISH

Our aim is to enable our students to develop the skills to engage with language in its many forms, and to appreciate and enjoy the richness of ideas and life found in the study of texts.

Courses

All English courses are based on the National Curriculum Framework.

Junior English Programme

In Years 9 and 10, our students follow the Junior Programme of English.  These two years provide a formative course where students consolidate and build on skills developed through their primary years.

A basic understanding of grammar and language functions should be mastered by the end of Year 10.

Students are also introduced to a range of literary genres and begin to understand the conventions of style associated with each of these.

Students are expected to gain confidence in their written and oral expression and the Junior Programme allows opportunities for practice in these important areas.

Reading programmes operate in all Junior English classrooms and Year 10 students have the opportunity to gain NZQA credits by completing the Unit Standard 8808 (a wide reading assessment).

Senior English

Senior students follow programmes that offer Achievement Standards and Unit Standards.  Students are placed in classes according to their ability, their prior achievement and their future needs.

The English Department endeavours to provide several pathways to enable students to attain the Level 2 Literacy credits required for tertiary study.

Supplementary Programmes and Initiatives

  • The Australasian English Exam takes place each year and is compulsory for identified GATE English classes.
  • Students have the opportunity to take part in many external speaking and writing competitions that are publicised through the English Department.
  • Students can participate in group excursions arranged by English staff as a means to enhance the learning experience beyond the classroom.
  • Students have the opportunity to attend performances by such groups as The Ugly Shakespeare Company.
