All Business Applications courses are optional. Students can choose to take a range of subjects from Year 9 Consumer Decisions to Year 13 Economics, Accounting or Organisation and Management.


Course Highlights


Year 9 Consumer Decisions

This course highlights the skills of decision making, planning, problem solving and communicating focusing on important topics for all consumers:

  • Income
  • Wise Saving
  • Wise Buying
  • Financial Loss
  • Accounting

Year 10 Enterprise Studies and Accounting

This innovative course designed by one of the leaders in Enterprise Education in New Zealand, Sue Impey, is designed to introduce students to the skills and ideas of being enterprising. These skills are seen by New Zealand and other governments as being essential to a country’s economic future.

Topics covered include:

  • Anyone Can Do It - Enterprising People
  • Resources and Adding Value
  • Initiative, Risk-taking, Control and Reward
  • The Money Go Round
  • Enterprises Come in All Shapes and Sizes
  • Striking the Human Match
  • You Can Do It - A student developed and run trade fair selling products that they make themselves

In addition the course includes a two term introduction to Accounting that prepares students for Year 11 Accounting.


Senior Economics - Year 11 to 13

The aim of senior economics courses is to develop in students an understanding of producers, consumers and the government’s role in our economy and the key issues relating to these sectors.


Year 11 Economics

This course focuses on how producers and consumers interact through the market. Topics include:

  • Types of Producers and Production
  • Types of Competition between Firms
  • Sectors of the Economy
  • Consumer Rights
  • The Market - Demand and Supply

Year 12 Economics

This course focuses on the key economic issues of:

  • Employment
  • International Trade
  • Inflation
  • Economic Growth
  • Inequality

Year 13 Economics

This focuses on analytical studies of firms and the market, the role of the government and macro-economic policies.


Senior Accounting

The aim of Year 11 to 13 Accounting is to introduce students to the key principles of accounting.

Year 11 Accounting focuses on the basic principles of accounting for sole traders.

Year 12 Accounting focuses on the role of Accounting sub-systems.

Year 13 Accounting introduces partnership and company accounting.


Year 12 Business Management

This course is run in conjunction with Manukau Institute of Technology and incorporates three topics that contribute towards the New Zealand Institute of Management Certificate in Supervisory Management:

  • Introduction to Marketing
  • Human Resource Development
  • Employment Relations

Year 13 Organisation and Management

This course is offered in conjunction with Manukau Institute of Technology and contributes towards the National Diploma in Business. Topics included are:

  • the various types of organisations and organisation structures
  • the role and functions of management
  • the managerial decision making process
  • the general, ethical and social responsibilities of management.

In addition the department runs two modules - Financial Literacy and Legal Studies.


Financial Literacy Module

This 13 week course aims to introduce students to the principles of Financial Planning, the ramifications of credit and borrowing and the principles of investment.


Legal Studies Module


This 13 week course introduces students to the basis of the New Zealand Legal system, their place in it and aims to show them their key rights in New Zealand Society.
